Svenja Kratz

In this informal presentation, Svenja Kratz explores the critical and creative potentials of cross-disciplinary engagements across the arts and sciences.  Using her research interests and creative work as a springboard for discussion, she provides insight into the development of her practice from early engagements within the area of cell and tissue culture, to more recent practices incorporating genetic engineering and biofabrication processes. The presentation will also include a brief discussion of the advantages and potentials of interdisciplinary and collaborative alliances.

Svenja Kratz is a contemporary artist interested in transdisciplinary creative practice, particularly the intersections between science and art. From 2008 - 2013 she worked as an artist in the area of cell and tissue culture at The Queensland University of Technology's (QUT) Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI). During this time, she produced a range of creative works that mapped her engagement with contemporary biotechnologies including cell and tissue culture and genetic engineering.  Since 2013, Svenja has continued to develop her creative practice across art and science through multi-disciplinary residencies at Leiden University in The Netherlands in 2013 and the University of Queensland (UQ) and QUT in 2015.

Svenja has exhibited her works at a range of national and international venues including The Science Gallery in Dublin in 2010, The Sydney Powerhouse Museum in 2013 and Experimenta Recharge, 6th International Biennial of Media Art touring Australia from 2015 – 2016. She holds a PhD in Biotechnology and Contemporary Art from QUT and is Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Creative Practice across the Tasmanian College of the Arts (TCotA) and the Creative Exchange Institute (CxI) at UTAS.
