Navigating the internal landscape

As part of the Navigating the Internal Landscape exhibition the Academy Gallery in partnership with Cancer Council Tasmania presents an afternoon of lectures, performance and artist floor talks to broker dialogue on the acceptance and discussion of cancer as a significant disease within our local community.

12.30pm | Lecture Room 1A181 – Academy Gallery
Welcome by Academy Gallery Director and exhibition curator Dr Malcom Bywaters.

12.40pm | Annexe Theatre
Cancer the challenge of today – an overview presentation by Dr Raj Eri of the impact of cancer upon our community. Dr Raj Eri lectures in the University of Tasmania School of Health Sciences. His specific research interests include investigating the causes and better treatment options for gut diseases including colorectal cancer.

1.20pm – 2.15pm | Annexe Theatre
Tobacco smoking, health implications, and an overview of the latest cessation interventions. Dr Mai Frandsen was the 2014 recipient of the inaugural joint University of Tasmania, Faculty of Health and Cancer Council Tasmania Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Dr Frandsen's three-year fellowship focusses on investigating ways of promoting smoking cessation among Tasmania's most vulnerable groups including pregnant women and people with lung disease.

2.15pm – 2.30pm Lecture break

2.30pm | Academy Gallery
Dr Robert Lewis, Chris Jackson and James Harrison of Persona Collective will perform Residue.

3pm | Academy Gallery
Dr Sorrel Standish White, Curator, Human Health and Disease Learning Centre incorporating the R.A.Rodda Museum of Pathology, University of Tasmania will speak on the significance of the displayed human tissue samples and the collection as tool for academic research.

3.30pm | Annexe Theatre
Penny Egan Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Council Tasmania in a conversation on cancer survivorship – what does it mean and what does it look like?

4.10pm – 5.15pm | Academy Gallery
Navigating exhibition Artist Talks. The exhibition artists will speak from the floor on the exhibition artworks.

5.30pm | Lecture Room 1A181 – Academy of the Arts
Key note address by Launceston based plastic surgeon Dr Maria Poppa. Maria special presentation will canvas the importance of maintaining a healthy attitude in the battle with cancer, small steps we can all take for prevention, the doors we can open if we need help, and the adjustments we can make in our attitude towards a positive future.

6.30pm – 7.30pm
Dr Malcom Bywaters closing address, followed by drinks and nibbles in the Academy Gallery. A time to review the artworks and informally speak with the exhibition curator, artists and day presenters and the impact of cancer on all Tasmanians.


TCotA Forum is a series of free public lectures held at the Tasmanian College of the Arts (Inveresk). Students and members of the public are welcome to attend. Lectures are presented by staff, visiting scholars from Tasmania, mainland Australia and overseas, industry professionals and artists-in-residence.
