Helen Wright - Navigating the Edge of Reason

Navigating the Edge of Reason

The talk will explore the origins and development of diverse bodies of drawn, printed and sculptural works as well as examining the connective tissue that links and binds them over a period of ten years.

“It so often happens when we look at an artwork that we become transported to another time or another place. When this occurs we usually have a good sense of what that time or place may be, but not so with Helen Wright, such is the eclectic diversity of borrowed objects and ideas, merged with her own idiosyncratic creations, that go into formulating her imagery. Like voyeurs in a foreign land comprised of rearranged pieces of our own, we drift through her piecemeal places, encountering threads of different realities that when looped and tied together form a surprising new whole. Unpicking these works would be a hazardous activity, for they are piled up in such a way that one erroneous tug could bring the whole structure down. They sit in a fine balance, each part depending on its adjacent counterpart.”

Curator, Gippsland Art Gallery
