Fostering Creativity in North and South Pacific Contexts

Sharing Stories from the Pacific Bridges Project (1990-2001) and New Pacific Studio (2001-2016)

What does a society need to enable it to thrive? I believe a small group anywhere whose members develop mutual trust and share ideas can generate a vision that can help to revitalize a district. Especially one that has lost its old shape and not yet found a new one. Its key tools are creative work, respect for cultural memory, honouring a district's built and natural heritage, hope, perseverance and a sense of humour. Artist residencies can act as bridge and hermitage.

Kay, b. Wellington NZ in 1943 and a current resident of Vallejo, CA, is emerita professor of critical theory at the University of California at Davis, and founding director of two artist residency programs, New Zealand Pacific Studio, and New Pacific Studio Vallejo. Her books include George Grosz. A Biography (Yale UP, 1988), Robert Cenedella. The American Artist as Satirist (2003), Moon over the Pacific. A Poet's Travel Diary (Steele Roberts, Wellington 2005) and Whispering Roads. A Napier-Wellington Scandinavian Trail (2011).
