Orpheus Descending | Third Year Theatre

Presented by: TCotA Theatre 3rd year students

The famous play by Tennessee Williams is set in a 1950’s dry goods store located in Two River County, Louisiana—a county corrupt with racist viciousness and redneck malevolence.

When Val, strolls into the small repressed town, he discovers unwanted ghosts from his past, malicious enemies and forms a relationship with a passionate woman trapped in an unhappy marriage. The rest of the county is filled out by a “Greek Chorus” of gossips and the Klu Klux Klan-like "Mystic Crew".

The play exhibits many of the playwright’s traditional themes of loneliness, desire, sexuality, repression, and the longing for freedom. The play is rich in imagery, lyrical language and symbolism. It is recognized as one of Williams’ most profound plays and is considered a mammoth text to stage.
