Judith-Rose Thomas

Tasmania's first Indigenous Artist - Paint & Protocols in Tasmania

Judith-Rose has over 30 murals in Tasmanian Schools. Her artwork is all around the world including private collections in Australia, also in the National Museum in Victoria. The first Aboriginal to obtain Government Art Spaces, in Tasmania. Judith-Rose's artwork is published in approximately 5 books, magazine covers and in most Government Departments in Hobart and Aboriginal Education Department.

Judith-Rose has designed 2 plaques for the Forestry Department, ABC Tasmania (Launceston & Hobart) and has painted 53 artworks for Australia's Indigenous Doctors Association, Victoria. Her work also includes a mural for the University of Tasmania Burnie (Rural Clinical School) and 5 artworks on the Launceston Flood Levee. She has also designed the shirts for the University of Tasmania Riawunna staff, soccer teams and has exhibited in Government House Hobart.

In her Art Forum presentation Judith-Rose's talk will include how hard work, determination, honesty and being reliable in her commissions has got her where she is today. She will also talk about protocols in Aboriginal Art, working in schools and the murals process start to finish. Judith-Rose will show murals and Aboriginal Art, explaining the Spirituality and Symbolism in the work.

TCotA Forum is a series of free public lectures held at the Tasmanian College of the Arts (Inveresk). Students and members of the public are welcome to attend. Lectures are presented by staff, visiting scholars from Tasmania, mainland Australia and overseas, industry professionals and artists-in-residence.
