Louise Allerton | Artist-in-Residence

Torrent

Louise is a Western Australian artist/photographer who spent over 15 years living and working in remote indigenous communities. This profoundly shaped her relationship to landscape, community and culture. Much of her photographic work explores the human dimensions to landscapes and environments and the visceral energy of place.

Her work has been shown in numerous national photography awards including the Ulrick Schubert Award, Olive Cotton Award, Head On, Iris Award and the National Photographic Portraiture prize.

Most recently she collaborated with Sydney sound artist Julian Knowles on an exhibition called "This Visceral Landscape" which blended old and new technologies combining still photography with video installation. Louise produced a series of still images of South Western Australian granite landscapes using the 1971 SX70 Polaroid camera, alongside Julian's live audio-visual installations, driven by live weather data which transformed video and sound according to weather patterns. This project was featured in a recent story for the ABC Radio National, Books & Arts program.

Louise has a wide range of influences from photography and film including contemporary indigenous photographers, Japanese photographers such as Moryama, American Cindy Sherman and video artists such as Bill Viola. She produces her work with a range of old and new technologies including Digital SLR, SX70 Polaroid, pinhole cameras and iPhones.

In this forum Louise will present a slide show of some of her past works, current works and a short video documenting her most recent exhibition This Visceral Landscape.

She will also touch on the development of her work during her Inveresk residency.
