豊川 – Toyokawa – East River- Piano Sonata

by Ralph Middenway

Toyokawa (East River) is a small city in central Honshu.

Toyokawa Inari-jinja is both a Sōtō Zen temple and a Shinto Shrine to Inari, the Happy God. Zen monks also act as Shinto priests.

In 1990, as one of the first international guests in Japan for the Lafcadio Hearn Centenary, I was noisily blessed there by the charming Præcentor, with a large cohort of musicians. The strong, eccentric rhythm near the beginning is derived from their music.

Tonight, Michael Kieran Harvey will première the newly rewritten piece, introdued by composer, Dr Ralph Middenway.
