Students studying Ensemble and Context units at the conservatorium have the opportunity to play in a range of exciting ensembles. These include jazz, rock, Latin, soul, funk and jump/jive ensembles to name just a few.
Classes include supervised rehearsals with expert staff, weekly workshop sessions and performance opportunities. In the Context component, students will study the history of jazz music and contextualize knowledge learned through a ‘Context Ensemble’.
In this ensemble, students are assigned a significant piece of music from the period in jazz history being investigated. They learn to play the piece with their group and give a seminar presentation on what they have discovered in the process.
