Tasmania has
five introduced species of Centaurea. These are all robust
annual or biennial herbs with erect stems with only tube flowers.
Some have the spinous flower heads typical of thistles (the yellow
flowered C. melitensis [Maltese Cockspur] and C.
solstitialus [St Barnaby's Thistle], and the purple flowered C.
calcitrapa [Star Thistle]). Others have fringed appendages on
the phyllaries (Knapweeds - C. jacea and C. nigra).
