is a common and conspicuous genus in Tasmania. There are 16
native species. They are all very
tough-leaved, tufted herbs with terminal spikes of flowers and
fruit. They are common in a wide range of heaths and forest
understoreys, ranging from the alpine zone to coastal dunes. The
leaves of almost all species and the culms of most species are
more-or-less flattened. |
