Rosettes
A rosette is a compressed stem - the internodes are very short so that the leaves are all at the very base of the stem, and usually lie on the ground. It is a very common and effective strategy for creating a ground cover or for avoiding exposure to wind (etc)
This photo shows weedy rosettes from five different dicot families
