Lethocolea is represented by Lethocolea pansa in
Tasmania. L. pansa is a widespread terrestrial liverwort of damp ground in
otherwise dry places. When sterile, it
resembles a very short fat Chiloscyphus although the lack of
underleaves in Lethocolea immediately distinguishes it. It
could also be confused for
Jamesoniella
tasmanica but differs in have abundant white rhizoids on the
ventral side of the shoot. Green gemmae can sometimes be seen on the shoot apex. The cells contain a
single rough oil body each.
This species was previously known as Lethocolea squamata.
