Better known as hornworts, the Anthocerotaceae is represented by 9
species in Tasmania. Distinguishing between species often require
details spore, and elater morphology. Hornworts can resemble thallose liverworts but
differ from the latter in having only 1-2 chloroplast per cell and needle-like
capsules which split lengthwise.
When sterile, hornworts can be mistaken for
Aneura (a thallose
liverwort) but are usually much
more closely flattened onto the substrate and have a deep dirty green
appearance.
