Fossombronia is represented by 6 species in Tasmania. The
genus is highly distinctive, characterized by the very crinkled
appearance of the thallus. Field identification of species is
difficult however, as species delimitation is highly reliant on
spore morphology.
The genus is typically found on damp soil in
otherwise dry habitats and sometimes also in disturbed open areas
with sufficient moisture.
The closely related
Austrofossombronia australis used to be included under this
genus.
A key to the species is under development.
