The Geocalycaceae is the largest family of liverworts in Tasmania
represented by 9 genera and a little over 90 species in Tasmania. The taxonomy of the genera
in the family is in a constant state of flux and changes are likely
in light of new molecular studies. For example, molecular evidence
has shown that the genus Geocalyx is more closely related to
Jungermannia than other members of the Gocalycaceae. In the
future, many members of the family are likely to be placed in a new
family, Lophocoleaceae. Some of the genera are only
reliably differentiated by examining their reproductive structures.
