Tasmania has only one species of Funaria, the cosmopolitan F.
hygrometrica (Cord moss), a moss often used in biology classes.
F. hygrometrica is a colonizing species and often comes up
in
large patches after a bush fire. It is also exceedingly
common in urban areas and potted gardens. Plants are non-descript
when sterile but unmistakable when fruiting. Previously, all the
species under the genus Entosthodon were classed under
Funaria. Indeed, the two genera are difficult to differentiate
in the absence of fertile material but F.
hygrometrica is much more common.
