Polytrichum is a well known genus of mosses known as haircap
mosses due to their hairy calyptrae (the covering over the
operculum).
There are two species of Polytrichum in Tasmania, both of
which are common mosses in both urban and natural environments.
Previous records of a third species Polytrichum piliferum,
have been found to be misidentified specimens of P. juniperinum.
A key to the species is in the works.
