Tasmania has
five introduced species of Papaver (poppies). A sixth species
(P. aculeatum) is listed in the Student's Flora, but this
species appears to no longer occur in Tasmania outside gardens. These plants
with showy flowers are common weeds.
P. somniferum (opium
poppy) is easily distinguished from the other species by its
glaucous, only slightly dissected leaves.
nb other genera of
Papaveraceae also have large showy "poppy" flowers, but
lack the pepper shaker capsules with the fused stigmas. |
