Tasmania has
three naturalised species of feather grass (Pennisetum). One
(Kikuyu - P. clandestinum) is a coarse spreading
perennial with the inflorescences hidden among the upper leaves. The
others (Feathertop - P. villosum - and African Feather Grass
- P. macrourum) are large tufted perennials with quite dense
panicles. The leaves are flat, with the ligule in the form of a line
of hairs. The spikes have one fertile floret subtended by a male or
sterile flower. |
