Spartina
anglica (rice grass) is an introduced grass that has become a significant
environmental weed. It grows on tidal flats and now dominates much
of the Tamar estuary, as well as a number of other estuaries in the
north and north-east. It is a large, erect grass (up to 1.5 m tall),
with leaves spread up the stem. It can be confused with a native
species from similar habits (Phragmites australis), but
differs in its inflorescence. Phragmites has a large feathery
inflorescence, whereas that of Spartina is composed of 2-6
narrow spikes. |
