Current crustacean aquaculture research works closely with current and future industry members & is focused on the areas of larval rearing, husbandry, health, nutrition, harvest technology & product quality. Species include rock lobsters and prawns.

Feeding and Activity in Fish

 

This program covers aspects of feeding & activity in fish including feeding strategies, feeding behaviour, rhythms, food anticipatory activity & diel patterns. The research has examined the effect of meal delivery frequency, feed type & environmental conditions on feeding & activity patterns, & technologies to measure these patterns.

Molluscan Aquaculture

 

Current research activities involve the oyster & mussel industry looking at development of novel feeds for larvae, control of broodstock conditioning & the process of market conditioning.

Fin Fish Aquaculture

Research on freshwater & marine finfish rearing involves established commercial species, new species & biological model species. Projects are undertaken topics such as egg incubation, larval & juvenile rearing, husbandry, environmental influences, nutrition, growth, health, physiology & harvest technology. We are interested in Atlantic salmon, striped trumpeter, barramundi, seahorses, and southern bluefin tuna.

Live Feeds

The aquaculture of many marine species involves live feeds (algae, zooplankton etc.) and important research including identification of new feed organisms and incorporation of probiotic microbes is conducted.
