  • Unit Information

    Identity and Place:

This unit will be a companion unit to Dynamics of Indigenous Cultures. Using different Indigenous societies from around the globe as focus groups, this unit examines notions of identity and the relationships that Indigenous people have developed with the land upon which they live. It will examine the histories of the various endeavours, both legal and social, that the people have made to establish themselves on, and as part of, their land. Although the two units can be taken separately, together they form an in-depth examination of contemporary Indigenousness around the world.

    Honours Program (methodology)
For the methodology paper, students will select a field of study relevant to their proposed honours thesis and write a critique of methodologies and theoretical perspectives used in that field. Students are expected to critically consider the possibilities for Indigenous methodology in their chosen field, to develop competence in critical reading of others' research findings, and to critically reflect on relevant philosophical, theoretical and methodological issues.
