Library Outreach

Information Skills Training for Secondary School Students

Library Outreach is a program organised by the University of Tasmania Library for Senior Secondary and College Students.  It focuses on year 11 and 12 students with a view to easing and encouraging their transition to University.

Aims of the program:

  • To develop students' information literacy skills prior to starting university.
  • To increase awareness of the range of information resources available.
  • To provide students with familiarity with the Library and the University campus.

The University Library offers tailored visits of the Library to school groups, and will provide a variety of training sessions including :

  • How to find information for an assignment in the catalogue.
  • Library tour showing the layout of the library.
  • How to find the items identified in the catalogue on the shelves.
  • How to use special collections which are appropriate to a particular  topic.

The University Library will be exploring opportunities to work more closely with school teachers and librarians. This could include workshops for school teachers and librarians on developing information literacy skills and enhancing their knowledge of the University Library resources.
