Library Services from the Cradle Coast Campus (previously the North-West Centre)

This page lists the opportunities and services available from the Information Resources Area in the Cradle Coast Campus (previously the North-West Centre), Burnie. The area is serviced primarily from the Launceston Campus Library.

Collection of High Use Library Material

  • All items in print on reading lists (required and recommended) are purchased, catalogued and shelved in the Quiet Study Area. The collection includes books from the Launceston and/or Hobart collections, personal copies, study material, photocopied material, audio and video cassette tapes, and some CD-ROMS.
  • All material is listed in the catalogue as: location 'Cradle Coast' and 'Not for loan'. The material is not for loan, but is available on 24-hour access.
  • A photocopier, cassette player and video cassette tape players are also available. Please bring change to add funds to your copying account - the dispenser takes $2, $1, 50c, 20c, 10c and 5c coins.
  • Lecturers: Please contact your liaison librarian or the Flexible Services Co-ordinator (x3534) to expedite ordering, cataloguing and listing of material on your reading lists.
Students: If you can not find material on your reading list in the Centre, let us know!
    This service has top priority!

Library Training

Librarians provide orientation sessions. Check the noticeboard in the Resources Area for details. Specific training will be offered as arranged.

  • The sessions may be in addition to lectures or offered within lecture time.
  • Hands-on sessions will be included, if possible.
  • You should feel confident and competent to search for yourself.
  • Training sessions also cover how to use the Library's databases and how to access full-text journals.

Contact the Flexible Services Co-ordinator or Launceston Reference staff to arrange a time for individual tuition; or phone on (03) 6324 3534 to 'talk-through' your problem while at the Centre.

Library Catalogue

Computers are available in the area with World Wide Web and Library network access. Machines in the Centre mirror what's available from other Library service points.

University internal telephones are adjacent, some with a direct link to the Launceston Library's Help Service (just press the button!). We will be pleased to answer any queries relating to the Library.

Item Request Forms

After identifying wanted material, fill in the Item Request Forms - one item per page. Reservations will be placed for material already on loan.

Some suggestions:

  • At the start of your studies choose material that says 'available'. Access to material already on loan may be delayed.
  • Ask for alternatives and please provide your unit code.
  • Providing us with the branch library location and shelf call number will expedite your request. (See examples of completed forms displayed in the area)
  • Check the catalogue for selected high demand journal articles and book chapter from reading lists that are available from eReserve.
  • Fax your forms to the Launceston Campus Library on (03) 6324 3362. It's easy.
  • Items on Reserve in all libraries are usually not for loan. We will photocopy contents pages and/or the index and you should then select the relevant section you require on an Item Request form. Copyright laws limit us to copying 10% of the total number of pages OR one chapter of a book OR one serial article from a single serial issue OR two or more articles from the same serial issue where the articles relate to the same subject matter.

Collection and Delivery of Items

You can select whether your requested items are:

  • sent by internal mail to the Cradle Coast Campus (previously the North-West Centre) (and placed in pigeon holes), or
  • posted to your semester address (only if you are eligible for Flexible Library Services). Flexible Library Services Registration forms are located on the display stand.

Loan items are held at the Centre for 7 days and then returned to Launceston.

Allow 4-5 working days for your items to arrive. If the item you requested is not immediately available, you will be notified by e-mail (Web requests) or by mail (paper requests). Material from reading lists is in high demand. Be prepared to accept alternatives or contact the Library regarding your information needs; also, check out the databases and electronic journals (see below).

Renewals and return of loan materials

You can renew loan materials by phone or e-mail. We will advise if another user requires the material. Renew or return items before the due date. We can not issue you with additional material if you have overdue material! Fines for late material may be paid at the Cradle Coast Campus reception desk.

Library material may be returned free of charge via the returns slot in the Information Resources Area or at the Library at the Devonport Campus, TAFE Tasmania; or posted at your own expense to the Launceston Campus Library, Locked Bag 1-312, Launceston, Tasmania, 7250.

Library Databases and Electronic Journals

The Library provides access to many databases. Some give details of articles in serials or parts of books, such as chapters or conference papers. Some databases include the full-text of the serial articles they index.

Some require user names and passwords to access - contact the Library for the relevant details.

Full-text services are particularly useful for Cradle Coast Campus users, because there is no delay in obtaining the information. The relevant articles can be read at the Centre, printed out or downloaded to floppy disk. Also check the list of electronic journals available in full-text on the Web.

There are also lists of serials held in the Library according to subject, a copy of which is available in the Information Resources Area. These lists will help you determine whether the Library holds a copy of the serial.

Check out the Library's publications display stand which has copies of the latest Library Guide and leaflets on Remote Access to Library Resources and Flexible Library Services, amongst other useful publications.

You should feel comfortable asking us for help, because we too enjoy learning and helping, but we need the questions!
