Rhys Jones1 & Gustaaf M. Hallegraeff 2 1 Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 2601, Australia, and 2 School of Plant Science, University of Tasmania, GPO Box 252-55, Australia, Tasmania 7001, Australia Archaeological investigations on two aboriginal caves at Rocky Cape, Tasmania, have established that shellfish were the major diet of Aboriginal tribes inhabiting the area some 6,000 years B.P. Examination of sediments associated with shellfish remains revealed the abundance of cysts of the toxic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum. Submission of Manuscripts The HAB2000 Conference Proceedings containing accepted papers (oral contributions and posters) will be published as one or two special issues (600-700 pages in total) of the international journal Phycologia. This decision has important advantages in allowing us to produce a high-quality, typeset, professionally edited volume, which is also available through many libraries. Page limitations on proffered contributions will be less strictly prescribed than at previous conferences in this series (5-6 printed pages would be an average paper) while we will also maintain the option of short communications (2-3 pp). However, journal publication renders it imperative that the work makes an original contribution and the results have not been published and are not being considered for publication elsewhere. Instructions for authors can be found at the worldwide web on Copies of the conference volume will be made available free of charge to all full-fee paying conference delegates, as well as to all journal subscribers, while extra copies will also be available via the IOC Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae and related outlets. Three typed doublespaced copies of the manuscript, based on talks or posters, must be submitted to the conference organizers not later than 11 February, 2000. Make sure your manuscript is linguistically acceptable when sending it for review. An editorial team consisting of G.M.Hallegraeff, C.J.Bolch, S.I.Blackburn and R.J. Lewis will distribute manuscripts to referees, and only after deemed suitable for publication will the manuscripts be passed on to the journal editor for final editing. Upon final acceptance of the manuscript, an electronic disk version will be requested. Allocation of the HAB2000 conference proceedings to a special journal issue (Feb-Mar 2001) also means that manuscript submission deadlines will be strictly implemented. Deadline for submission of manuscripts 11 February 2000 Deadline for final acceptance of manuscripts 31 August 2000 Proposed publication of Conference Proceeding mid 2001 Conference contributions such as new bloom reports which do not meet the criteria for journal publication will be considered for the IOC newsletter Harmful Algae News or a similar IOC publication. Posters should be prepared to occupy a space which measures 90 cm in width and 150 cm in height. They will be prominently displayed for the entire duration of the conference in the area where coffee-tea breaks are scheduled, immediately next to the lecture theatres.
