Distinguishing features: Common small shrub of alpine or subalpine areas, often creeping over rocks. Leaves reduced to scales, alternate, stems photosynthetic, angled in cross section. Can only be confused with E. nanus which has opposite leaves, or possibly Leptomeria glomerulata, which grows near the south and west coasts.
