If so, you need to enrol with us! We are passionate about geology and love what we do.
In addition we are highly regarded nationally and internationally for the top-quality graduates we produce. Most are snapped up by the minerals industry, others choose research careers in universities or government geological surveys. Visit the 'Educational Outcomes' page of our Centre of Excellence to view the high-level positions our past students obtained in Australia and overseas.

Undergraduate teaching and postgraduate degree supervision is provided by academics who are international leaders in their fields, and our teamwork focus means our postgraduate students are supported by all academics (not just their allocated supervisors). Visit our 'Study With Us' page for detailed course and scholarship information.
Our constant collaboration and close relationships with industry results in a very dynamic and stimulating learning environment, enabling students to meet and work closely with industry personnel throughout their study period.
The School of Earth Sciences is intricately linked with two major research centres: CODES - ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits at the University of Tasmania and CRC ORE (the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction) at the University of Queensland. This has resulted in collaborative teaching and research; very high-quality laboratory and analytical facilities; and increased research strengths in environmental mineralogy and geochemistry.
For undergraduate students, there are a variety of undergraduate courses and units available (the core degree being the Bachelor of Science). For postgraduate students, we offer a wide range of national and international Honours, Masters and PhD projects. You can study full time or complete our Master of Economic Geology by coursework while working full time. Visit our 'Study with Us' page for detailed course and scholarship information.
We are very highly regarded nationally and internationally for our research and teaching in the geological sciences. Our strengths are in economic geology (metallic mineral deposits), volcanology, igneous petrology, tectonics, marine geology, geophysics, geochemistry and geometallurgy. Many of our Honours and postgraduate projects involve travel to interesting and remote world-wide locations (e.g. Antarctica, Asia, Russia, South America, China, Mexico, Alaska, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, USA, Europe). Research is both fundamental and applied, with project funding and student scholarships provided by the University of Tasmania, government agencies and the exploration and mining sectors.

Located at the Hobart Sandy Bay campus (Geology/Geography/Physics building), the the School of Earth Sciences and the CODES ARC Centre of Excellence have a huge range of major research projects spanning over 28 countries (academic and postgraduate student projects). They have a large cohesive team of top class academic, professional and technical staff and an average of 120 postgraduate students and 180 undergraduate students per year. Their combined annual budget is approximately $11 million.
In addition, there are a host of national and international partners, contributors and collaborators who interact regularly with, and form part of, the Centre and School's research programs (e.g. CRC ORE, AMIRA International and approximately 70 industry companies and 80 institutes and universities — approximately 75% of which are internationally based).
