Administration and Facilities

   

The School Secretaries are your contacts for stationary, room booking, ordering consumables, travel payments, casual employment and payment, long-distance calls, etc. Requests must be discussed with your supervisor first.

Photocopying and Faxes

Candidates may use the School's photocopier, located in Room 409, Level 4, Commerce Building. A password is required and can be obtained form the School Secretary.

The fax machine is also located in room 409. The fax number is 6226 2077. For confidential faxes candidates may prefer to use the fax located in room 407. the number is 6226 7587.

For help with using the fax or photocopy machine please ask the secretaries.

Minimal Infrastructure Standards

The University has adopted a set of Minimal Infrastructure Standards for Graduate Research students. The School aims to meet and exceed all these standards. If you believe that we do not meet them in any respect, please tell the Graduate Research Coordinator. The School attempts to support research to the fullest possible extent while mindful of budgetary constraints.

Access

Anytime access to the buildings and laboratories is provided by proximity card. Provision of proximity cards and keys will be facilitated through the Faculty of Business Main Office, Level 5, Commerce Building. You will need to check with your supervisor regarding access to any special spaces. Proximity cards must be returned when your Graduate Research candidature ceases.

Budget and Expenditures

Your research proposal should include a budget item and this budget should be discussed with your supervisor prior to presentation of your proposal. If funds are allocated to your project, you must organise all expenditure through your supervisor. In no cases will you be reimbursed for expenses incurred prior to supervisor approval and compliance with School procedures. All expenses must be approved prior to being incurred.

Interlibrary Loans

Candidates may request material not available in the University’s library by filling in the appropriate form found on the Library web site.

Facilities, Computing and Software

All candidates will be housed in room 403, Level 4 Commerce Building. This room currently has four computers with access to Microsoft Office. As this room will be shared by a number of candidates it is essential to respect each other’s requirements and commitments.

Software packages such as the econometrics packages ET, SHAZAM, SAS and TSP are available on the network, while access to LIMDEP and STATA, S-Plus, Finmetrics and EViews can be arranged with your supervisor. The database dX is also available through the network. This database contains a wealth of macroeconomic time series. If you require other software please see your supervisor as the School currently has an array of software packages that may suit your needs.

Computing Problems

All computing problems should be logged with the University helpdesk by either emailing support@comm.utas.edu.au or phoning the helpdesk on ext 1818. Candidates should clearly identify in their email: student name, ID number, status (ie Masters or PhD student), the lease machine number (number is marked on the red label located on the computer) and clearly state the problem experienced.

Seminar Program

The School of Economics and Finance runs a Seminar program during the teaching semesters. Details of the seminar program for the current year can be found at: http://www.utas.edu.au/ecofin/home/seminar.htm

Candidates are expected to present a seminar on their thesis topic. The candidate is expected to present a seminar once a year during the duration of his/her thesis study.
