Overview
The School of Economics and Finance at the University of Tasmania is highly regarded for its research and research related activities such as its Research Higher Degree Program. The School has been ranked very highly in a recent study that compared the research performance of Economics Departments in Australian Universities (see Frank Neri and Joan Rodgers, "Ranking Australian Economics Departments by Research Productivity", The Economic Record, Sept, 2006, Vol. 82, Special Issue, S74-S84.) According to this study which has received wide media coverage, the School of Economics and Finance at UTAS was ranked No. 2 on the basis of publications measured by "Quality adjusted pages per person during the period, 1996-2002".
The School also did very well in terms of the extent of staff participation in quality research publications. This means that the School of Economics and Finance has an excellent collection of research active, potential supervisors for the prospective research higher degree student to work with during her/his training. The diversity of staff's research interests is evident from the link that is given below. The School also has a good track record of obtaining competitive research grants such as the ARC Discovery and Linkage
Grants.

Staff Research Interests
The Economics and Finance RHD program at UTAS consists of Master's and PhD programs which are entirely by research. However, depending on the background of the student, the School reserves the right to insist that the student fulfills certain prior requirements such as passing specified units before proceeding to the dissertation. There are scholarships that are available at the University level that the prospective applicant is encouraged to apply for. In addition, the School has possibilities for teaching assistance that have proved useful in the past in providing doctoral and master's students with some financial support.
The School has a satisfactory record of RHD completions. We give below two examples of such completions.
- Su San Leong, MEc, 2002, "Parity Conditions,Currency Forward Market Efficiency and Risk Premium: Australian Evidence"
- Qing Zhang, PhD, 2002 "Regional Growth of the Chinese Economy "
All our RHD students who have completed their degree from UTAS have gone on to do well in their subsequent careers.
