Economics Degree

Students Outside Commerce Building
The Bachelor of Economics degree has a flexible structure that allows students a range of choices in their study program. It consists of 24 units. Twelve units in the degree are compulsory- four at first year and four in each of years two and three. It is possible to count a number of units offered from other Schools - either from the Faculty of Business or another faculty - towards the degree, for example: management, marketing, information systems, computing, foreign languages, mathematics, politics and government, psychology, biology, science, etc.

The three year full-time Bachelor of Economics degree is offered on the Hobart campus. The first year can be studied at Launceston and Burnie, students must then transfer to Hobart.

The aims of the Bachelor of Economics degree are:

  • to equip the student with a set of marketable skills by introducing the principles of economics and inculcating the economics way of thinking as it applies to business issues and more broadly to the social sciences,
  • develop a detailed understanding of the issues and factors, both national and international, that determine how economic systems are organised and how decisions are made by individuals, business firms and governments,
  • provide you with the quantitative skills required by employers to understand business reports and analyses, to be able to investigate economic issues in a scientific way and to communicate information in an effective manner and,
