Dawn Penney, Sharon Pittaway and Helen Yost – Project name: “Learning online: investigating the student perspective” $3,391.00
“Learning online: investigating the student perspective” is the first part of a broader research project in development, entitled ‘Research led development of on-line pedagogy’.
The Bachelor of Education (In-service) introduced online learning and teaching in three units in semester 1, 2008 and has since extended that development to enable the full course to be studied through flexible delivery. This research project is utilising the productive pedagogies framework (Lingard et al., 2001; Luke, 2002; Zyngier & Gale, 2003) to investigate and critically analyse on-line learning and teaching in the BEd In-Service course from the perspectives of students, lecturers and tutors. The project is designed to inform ongoing on-line teaching development work across the Faculty in relation to unit design, pedagogy and assessment.
On-line survey and focus group methods are being utilised for data collection, with questions framed to directly link to the dimensions of the productive pedagogies framework:
- Intellectual Quality (addressing the concern that lecturers and learning and/or assessment activities can potentially focus on the ‘basics’ rather than on intellectually demanding work);
- Connectedness (addressing the need for learning and assessment activities to be connected to the professional work contexts and lives of participants);
- Supportive Classroom Environment (addressing the concern that learning and teaching environments should be supportive); and
- Engagement with Difference (seeking to explain theoretically and practically how to improve the academic achievement of students with diverse learning backgrounds, abilities and interests).
To date, two on-line surveys have been conducted with students. Results from this first phase of work are informing the design of the next phase of research, addressing tutor and lecturer perspectives.
- Bronwyn Reynolds and Ian Edmondson – Project name: “Exploring quality practice in contemporary indigenous education” $10,353.26
This research aims to capture perceptions of key stakeholders in relation to quality practice in indigenous education. The research will draw on the experiences, beliefs and perceptions of fellow academics, recent graduates, local and national experts and key indigenous education providers, in building a holistic picture of the contemporary status of indigenous education.
