Clearances

Students undertaking professional experience placements must ensure they have the appropriate clearances for their state or territory. Clearances can take up to six to eight weeks to be processed, so please ensure you apply for any relevant clearances as soon as possible to ensure you are able to undertake your professional experience placement.

All students undertaking a professional experience placement as part of an Education degree must complete a Safety in Practice Agreement annually. The purpose of the Agreement is to ensure that you are aware of your rights and responsibilities while undertaking professional experience placements.

To complete the form, please download it to your computer and save it. Complete all relevant section of the form electronically, including tying your name and date, save your changes and then upload the Agreement onto InPlace. If you are having difficulties doing so, please print the form complete, scan and upload to InPlace.

If you need to make a disclosure on your Safety in Practice Form, you will also be required to submit a Health Assessment, to establish your ability to meet the Professional Experience Mandatory Requirements (see Page 2 of the 'Safety in Practice' form). If University Staff have concerns about your capacity to meet these Mandatory Functional Requirements, the Academic Director, Professional Experience or your Program Director will discuss this with you and may require you to arrange and submit a Health Assessment to confirm your eligibility for placement and/or to inform the provision of any relevant support.

The Coordinator, Professional Experience will be able to discuss any additional arrangements and support that you may need whilst on placement.

Students who commenced their current degree in Semester 2, 2016 or later:

All students commencing an initial teacher education (ITE) course in Semester 2, 2016 or later are required to successfully complete LANTITE prior to graduation. UTAS students are required to successfully complete LANTITE prior to enrolling in the final professional experience unit*.

Students who commenced their current degree prior to Semester 2, 2016:

All students are EXPECTED to complete LANTITE, however students who commenced prior to semester 2, 2016 will not be required to complete the tests in order to enrol in the final professional experience unit or prior to graduation.

Students are strongly encouraged to complete LANTITE due to the employment advantages it is likely to provide. Some states or territories outside of Tasmania require successful completion of LANTITE prior to registration or for employment purposes.

When should I undertake LANTITE:

The final opportunity to undertake LANTITE is Window 4 of the previous year (for students undertaking final placement in Semester 1) and Window 2 of the current year (for students undertaking final placement in Semester 2).

We highly recommend sitting LANTITE as soon as you feel prepared, and allowing yourself up to 3 windows to attempt the test if possible. More information including registration and window dates see Test Windows .

Preparation and Support:

Prior to your 1^st Attempt:

Prior to attempting LANTITE you should complete the MyLO Literacy and Numeracy Tests and familiarise yourself with the practice tests and resources on the ACER Website as detailed in the LANTITE information email sent out regularly throughout the year.

Prior to your 2^nd Attempt:

If you are unsuccessful on your first attempt at LANTITE, you should revisit the MyLO Literacy and Numeracy Tests and re-familiarise yourself with the practice tests and resources on the ACER Website. Additional information is also available on the School of Education website, and purchasing the Cambridge LANTITE Edge resources is recommended.

Prior to your 3^rd attempt:

If you are unsuccessful on your 2nd attempt of LANTITE, evidence of affirmative action must be provided. You must send an email to: SAA.Education@utas.edu.au and you will be contacted to discuss strategies for success on your third attempt. This discussion will include what attempts at preparation have been made. At this point, you need to be aware that a 4th attempt is not always made available,  and if granted is generally the final attempt - so you need to be as prepared as possible prior to undertaking LANTITE for the 3^rd attempt.

Prior to your 4^th attempt

If you are unsuccessful on your 3^rd attempt of LANTITE, an appointment must be made with the School of Education by sending an email to: SAA.Education@utas.edu.au.  At the appointment you will need to be prepared to discuss your progress and preparation so far. Prior to gaining permission for a 4^th attempt, you must meet with the Director of ITE to  provide evidence of what preparation has been undertaken. If a 4^th attempt is approved the Director of ITE will contact ACER to approve your registration of the 4^th attempt. This must be done well before the next testing window is open, otherwise ACER will not approve your registration.

Prior to your 5^th attempt

If you are unsuccessful on your 4^th attempt at LANTITE, you will be referred to the Head of School for further discussion as a 5th attempt is only permissible under extenuating circumstances. The Head of School must certify that you have satisfied all the relevant criteria and provided sufficient information and documentary evidence (for example, a medical impact statement or professional report) to substantiate the claims that you have met the criteria:

• Criteria 1. Special or extenuating circumstances have impacted on the student’s results to date and that the special or extenuating circumstances have now been resolved and are expected to impact less on the student’s next test attempt.

• Criteria 2. A suitable level of remedial intervention has been provided by the HEP/TRA and undertaken by the student to improve the student’s personal literacy and/or numeracy skills. (Ref the sliding scale table in Annexure A of the Supplementary Guidelines to this policy for examples of support that can be expected prior to each test attempt).

• Criteria 3. There is a reasonable expectation that the student has a chance to meet the standard should an additional resit be provided, including reference to how close to meeting the test standard the student has been and whether improvement has been shown over previous test attempts. Requests must include information about the students’ results for all test attempts.

• Criteria 4. The student’s academic performance throughout their initial teacher education program has been strong and the candidate is well suited to teaching.
