To be eligible to undertake your Professional Experience you are required to obtain a Student Good Character Determination from the Teachers Registration Board (TRB), Tasmania, or state/territory equivalent.
Pre-service teachers who are located interstate or outside of Australia, or Tasmanian students undertaking placement in different location require the relevant state/territory clearance/s.
In addition to obtaining a Student Good Character Determination, students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) must also undergo a Safety Screening Assessment from the Department of Education.
N.B. You cannot commence your Professional Experience placement until confirmation has been received that you have obtained the relevant clearance. You should allow 4-6 weeks for applications to be processed.

Student Good Character Determination - Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board (TRB) |
The Student Good Character Determination must be obtained by all pre-service students who reside in Tasmania prior commencing placement. Applications must be completed on-line. Pre-service teachers are required to "sign up" and create an account in the system. In order to do this contact details and an email address must be provided. Read more about Student Good Character Determinations on the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board website. |
|
Often confused with the TRB Student Good Character Determination, this clearance is required when working or volunteering in Department of Education facilities. It is not required for Professional Experience. |
|
|
This application must be completed and obtained prior to undertaking a placement in a registered child care centre. Completed applications, documentation and payment are send to the Department of Education. Once confirmation is received from the DOE a copy must be provided to the Professional Experience Office. |

The Australian Institute of Family Studies provides useful information and links relevant to the Australian States and Territories. Please note that checks can take anywhere up to 2 months to complete. Pre-service teachers need to start the process as early as possible to prevent any issues caused by possible delay. If the country you are completing your placement in does not have a relevant working with children check, please advise the Professional Experience Office. |

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they are able to undertake Professional Experience in their country of residence and meet any legislation requirements. Students must provide evidence to the Professional Experience Office, that they have applied/met the legislation requirements of the relevant Country, in order for placement to be confirmed. |
These checklists have been developed to assist the pre-service teacher with the steps they must take once their placement has been confirmed.

Students should look to colleague teachers for regular and constructive feedback throughout their Professional Experience placement. Specific time should be set aside for discussions where clear and honest feedback is provided (what went well, what needs to be improved, how might improvements be made, etc) and dated records of these feedback conversations should be provided by the colleague teacher.
UTAS requirements mean that the colleague teacher needs to complete a formal assessment of the student's competency against set criteria which broadly include:
Professional Knowledge | Demonstrates current professional knowledge and skills to be able to plan for and manage learning programs |
Professional Practice | Demonstrates a growing capacity to plan, implement and assess for effective teaching and learning as well as maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. |
Professional Engagement | Demonstrates the capacity to develop effective relationships with the school community to enhance learning opportunities. |
These three criteria based on the AITSL graduate standards are unpacked in greater depth as is relevant at each developmental stage (i.e., PE1, PE2, PE3 and PE4). This alignment with AITSL standards ensures that students have an opportunity to demonstrate they have met the necessary standards for provisional registration as a teacher at the conclusion of their requisite Professional Experience placements.
Each Professional Experience placement (PE1-4) is embedded within a unit of work which is designed to prepare pre-service teachers for their placement, as well as including course content which is assessed. Professional Experience placements are not graded as such; instead pre-service teachers will receive an overall award of UP (Ungraded Pass) for successful completion of Professional Experience requirements. This grade is awarded by the unit coordinator, based upon the recommended assessment made by the colleague teacher.
