Dr Hill coordinates and lectures the following units in the Bachelor of Education (Outdoor Education Specialisation) and Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies:
Dr Allen Hill is a lecturer and researcher in Outdoor and Sustainability Education. His PhD, awarded from the University of Otago (New Zealand) in 2011, focused on critically examining teachers’ conceptions of outdoor education and encouraging and enabling teachers to incorporate aspects of sustainability into their thinking, philosophies, and pedagogies.
Prior to moving to the University of Tasmania, Dr Hill taught on outdoor education and sport sociology programs in the School of Physical Education, University of Otago, New Zealand. He was also a secondary school teacher for eleven years holding a number of middle and senior management positions in health and physical education, outdoor education, and assessment. Dr Hill has significant governance and leadership experience, holding positions on the executive boards of the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (NZMSC) and Outdoors New Zealand (ONZ).
Dr Hill’s research interests include education for sustainability in schools and universities, safe learning in outdoor education, cycle commuting, and exploring social justice/class in outdoor recreation/education. He is currently on the editorial board of the New Zealand Journal of Outdoor Education and a reviewer for Environmental Education Research.
