Non Academic Capability Assessment Tool (NACAT)

All providers of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Australia are required to select entrants into their ITE courses on the basis of non-academic capabilities, as well as academic. This was one of 37 outcomes from a Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group (TEMAG) in 2014. This requirement is for all prospective students who apply to commence their first ITE course after 1 January, 2017.

University of Tasmania applicants' non-academic capabilities will be assessed based on the submission of two 500-word Personal Statements and your response to a few multiple-choice questions. Please plan to address two categories in which you describe your work and life experiences that demonstrate awareness of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and understanding of and motivations about the course you are applying for. The personal statement is evaluated against criteria used by institutions in at least two other states in Australia (Queensland and New South Wales).

You will be able to access further information and complete your Personal Statement and multiple choice questions online from anywhere with internet connection during the admissions period as part of your application to the School of Education University of Tasmania. The process is free of charge.
