Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning)

After completing grade 10 in Launceston, I went on to successfully gain an apprenticeship in the hairdressing industry.  After 6 years in the industry, I obtained a teaching position at TAFE, teaching certificate II and III in hairdressing.  I soon realised that I loved working with students and decided to return to study.

I never really thought about attending University. After completing High School I felt I needed a break from education.  It was after obtaining employment at TAFE and helping students reach their goals and become successful that I chose to pursue pathways in becoming a qualified teacher.

I was the first of my family to attend University, so it's a huge achievement. While studying, I enjoyed being able to work in the education department and in classrooms, alongside studying education as I could put theory into practice immediately and trial new ideas.  I also enjoyed my practical experiences. Everyone that I worked with was very encouraging, supportive and had a wealth of knowledge to share.  I learnt so many tips in behaviour management, engaging activities and working with disadvantaged and disabled students.

The Applied Learning academic staff were amazing! Supportive, always happy to lend a hand no matter what time of day, encouraging, and they used a great variety of learning resources to meet my needs.

Now that I have graduated, I hope to be a successful teacher with a rewarding career. Gaining a teaching qualification through the University of Tasmania has given me the opportunity to explore employment opportunities in a variety of school as before I was restricted to teaching VET subjects only.
