My highlights so far would have to be my Prac experiences. It is so much fun and I love working with the kids and it is excellent to see how much they enjoy the games that we play.
I really enjoy the Educational units we are required to complete in our degree as I can relate a lot of what I learn to the development of my own children as they start school. The Design units are also very enjoyable and cover a lot of diverse areas.
Make the most of the help being offered to you and utilise your tutors - they answer most queries when you're unsure of something - and keep up-to-date in all your units, it's easy to get behind!
My favourite unit has been Introduction to Human Biology. I have found it really engaging and interesting because there is so much subject matter, and I feel like I am really learning something.
Outdoor Education because it has challenged me the most. Not just academically but it has also helped me to reflect inwardly, challenging my concepts of what makes a great teacher and in so doing challenging my own character and how I work with others. Outdoor education has also opened up my mind to different ways to educate and it has taught me the importance of becoming a great leader.

There are no specific prerequisite subjects but for those who wish to pursue study in Health & Physical Education and Outdoor Education success at the senior secondary level in subjects such as English, Maths, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Sport Science, Psychology, Food & Nutrition and Outdoor Leadership would be an advantage.
For those who wish to pursue Design & Technology success in subjects such as English, Maths, Design Graphics, housing & Design, Food & Nutrition, Wood, Metal and Textiles would be an advantage.
Students are encouraged to apply for recognition of prior learning, which includes formal study undertaken in recognised tertiary institutions, or other demonstrated learning achievement. The double advantage website provides more information on formal articulation arrangements that exist.
The eApplications process asks if applicants want credit for previous study. Please indicate 'yes' and ensure that certified copies of your certificates of completion are provided to the admissions office.
Whether on-campus of off-campus, each student should allow approximately 10 hours of focused study per unit, per week. This estimate includes on-campus lectures, tutorials and workshops which generally equate to 3-4 hours per unit, per week.
Students must be available to attend unpaid Professional Experience at schools on a full-time basis for a number of weeks each year, totalling a minimum of 80 days over 4 years. A Teachers Registration Board Good Character Check is required before students can undertake placements.
UTAS Faculty of Education pre-service teacher courses are accredited through the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania. Graduates from the course are eligible for registration with the Teachers Registration Board, Tasmania upon successful completion of the degree (online application process). The mutual recognition act (Mutual Recognition Act 1992 (Cth) or the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (Cth)) entitles those who are already registered (in the first state) to register in the other states of Australia and New Zealand. Please note that this does not apply to New South Wales – more information.
The University of Tasmania believes that as far as possible a student's financial situation should not be allowed to be an impediment to a university education. With the assistance of State and local governments, business and industry in Tasmania, and generous benefactors, it is able to provide awards to make access to the benefits of tertiary education easier.
The Tasmania Scholarships program runs on a calendar year basis. Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior.
For more information see Scholarships.
Not entirely. All units are available both face to face (internal) at the Newnham Campus (Launceston). However some of the core units are also available fully online. Students have the flexibility to enrol in both internal and external units within the same semester.
Each December the Faculty of Education conducts a Summer School. Summer School units generally consist of the normal 13 weeks of study, but with intensive delivery for up to five days on-campus. Those who are able to attend Summer School, who normally study by distance, enjoy the collegiality of class-based study and interaction with fellow students and lecturers. Summer School units are generally released in October/November each year. Students will be notified by email.
Some students may not be able to attend on-campus Orientation because of distance or other commitments. Online Orientation takes you through how to get organised for study, find support and set yourself up for academic success. Online Orientation can also be a handy backup for students who attend on-campus orientation and want reminders or further information. The Faculty also provide a specific orientation through MyLO (My Learning Online) which is accessible again and again throughout the year.
UTAS Faculty of Education pre-service teacher courses are Commonwealth supported for citizens of Australia, permanent residents, New Zealand Citizens and holders of humanitarian visas.
Australian citizens, and holders of humanitarian visas who are resident in Australia for the duration of the course, may defer their payment via HECS-HELP. Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens must pay up-front for the units in which they are enrolled each semester. More Information on course costs.
International students should refer to the International students' website.
Most units require students to have access to prescribed text books in order to complete assignments. Take into account the costs of stationery, resource materials for assignments and postage. All units have some online component so broadband internet access costs must also be taken into consideration. The university has computer laboratories which are available for on-campus students to use.
Outdoor Education students are recommended to also see the frequently asked questions below that refer to Outdoor Education.
The School of Education strongly encourages all pre-service teachers to maintain regular contact with schools or sporting organisations. For this reason, volunteering in an educational setting or sporting organisation is highly recommended. In addition, many units require students to have access to an educational setting so being involved in an ongoing volunteering arrangement would be highly beneficial.
The Co-op Bookshop offers general books; textbooks and stationery, located in the Student Union Building on the Hobart campus or Newnham Drive Launceston campus. Alternatively you can purchase your texts online from the Coop Bookshop.
Electives provide the opportunity to undertake academic studies in areas of choice and should be chosen strategically to enhance skills in different teaching areas, or areas of special interest. Where available, units may be undertaken with any faculty, including the Faculty of Education (e.g. Outdoor Education Units).
There are some electives that are highly recommended due to their relevance to the specialisation. You will be advised of these upon the commencement of your course.
There is provision to undertake the final year at honours level. A high level of academic achievement overall is a pre-requisite and eligible students will be invited to participate in the honours program.
Submitting you application is the first step to becoming a student. If successful you will receive an offer to join the course. The following steps provide a process so you understand the transition into University life.
For Outdoor Education units that require equipment, specific activity equipment (climbing, paddling) will be provided by the University or outside provider. No personal equipment for outdoor activities will be provided.
Please use the information below, as well as that given in class, to inform purchasing decisions. Students are also encouraged to seek advice from local businesses when purchasing equipment. Having a good knowledge of equipment is essential to being an outdoor educator, so in purchasing your own equipment, you will be on your way.
In the first two Outdoor Education units (undertaken in the Bachelor of Education with the Outdoor Education major), students will be required to have their own personal equipment for a day out and about. This means a day pack, hat, sunscreen, closed in shoes and suitable raincoat.
In the second, third and final years of study (undertaken in the Bachelor of Education with the Outdoor Education major), students will be required to have their own personal camping equipment for overnight bushwalking. This means
IMPORTANT – you do not need to OWN all this equipment before you start classes. Many of the above items can be hired through local businesses. The prices show approximate costs - you don’t need to choose the most expensive.
The main costs encountered will be with the purchase of personal equipment, travel to and from field activities, and food and disposables while on field trips. The costs outlined above to give you an idea of approximate costs. You do not need to own the most expensive items, and many items can be hired from local businesses.
Additional fees may be charged to cover course costs (e.g. climbing, paddling etc).
The Bachelor of Education - Outdoor Education Specialisation and Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies articulate with the following TAFE/Polytechnic courses with the following credit arrangement:
| Completed Course | Recognised Prior Learning/Credit |
|---|---|
| Certificate III Fitness | 1 student elective |
| Certificate IV Fitness | 2 units - to be advised upon application |
| Certificate III Outdoor Recreation | 1 student elective |
| Certificate IV Outdoor Recreation | 2 units - to be advised upon application |
| Certificate III in Tourism (Guiding and Outdoor Recreation) | 1 student elective |
| Certificate IV in an unrelated area | 1 student elective |
| Diploma/Advanced Diploma in unrelated area | 2 student electives |
The eApplications process asks if applicants want credit for previous study. Please indicate 'yes' and ensure that certified copies of your certificates of completion are provided to the admissions office.
For more information on credit, otherwise known at UTAS as the double advantage.
Each unit contains field components that may require you to be available on weekends or for extended periods. These dates are advised to students prior to each semester starting and vary according to units. Throughout the Outdoor Education major you will have approximately 20-30 field days. These are additional to the Professional Experience placements.
In first year units, class size will be approximately 90 – 120 students, with tutorials of up to 30 students. Tutorials are organised according to enrolment, so Outdoor Education students enrolled in the major will be in the same tutorial. From second year onwards, class size reduces to 12-24 students in a unit.
You do not need to come to the course with experience, however it is of great benefit to you if you do come with prior experience in outdoor education/recreation and/or any of the activity areas (climbing, paddling, bushwalking). However, many students have come into the course with limited/no experience, and through personal commitment to involvement in these activities have graduated with appropriate skill levels.
Whether or not you come with prior experience, Outdoor Education is an area that requires constant commitment to developing outdoor skills (bushwalking, climbing, paddling etc) in order to remain current and competent in these areas.
A commitment to being involved in improving personal skills in the many outdoor skill areas would be of great benefit to improving employability. Gaining qualifications in skill areas of interest (e.g. climbing, paddling etc) would also benefit graduates. While some skill training is offered in the course (particularly in the elective units ESP216 & ESP226), students are required to invest their own time to improve these skills.
Entry into the Master of Teaching is based on previous degree and/or recognised skills or competency.
The Bachelor of Education Design & Technology specialisations do not require any previous skills or experience. General entry requirements apply.
