Bachelor of Education Specialisations
Emmanuel Christian School & Elizabeth College, Hobart
Certificate IV in Personal Training
Health and Physical Education + Outdoor Education
I have always been passionate about health and fitness. I chose a primary specialisation because we were given the option in our first year and I thought I would be able to handle young children better than older ones. However, after all I have learnt and experienced during my course, I now realise I would gladly teach either.
Outdoor Education because it has challenged me the most. Not just academically but it has also helped me to reflect inwardly, challenging my concepts of what makes a great teacher and in so doing challenging my own character and how I work with others. Outdoor education has also opened up my mind to different ways to educate and it has taught me the importance of becoming a great leader.
Highlights: teaching in schools and seeing students improve under my tuition. Bumping into students outside of school and finding out they enjoyed the time I spent teaching them. Making a lot of new friends particularly in the outdoor environment.
Challenges: Becoming a better leader and in so doing recognising that the great leaders are always thinking of others.
Get support! There is lots of support out there to help people through uni. Hit Centerlink, Tasmanian University Union (TTU), the student centre and online resources - get as much help as you can to make it easier. You’ll be able to have way more fun this way.
Making a big impact! I want my students to love learning and love coming to class. I believe teachers and students can have fun in class through creativity and fascination, to create a learning environment enjoyed by all. And I believe I can make this happen.
I was diagnosed with severe dyslexia in secondary school, and some of my teachers never believed I would make it to University, let alone pass. I even had a teacher try to convince me that picking up trash for a lifelong job is nothing to be ashamed off. He is right, but his faith in my ability was very disheartening. I now have half a year left to finish my 4 year degree, and I will be graduating on the 15th of December. On that day I will stand proud, having accomplished what many people (including some of my family) thought I would not be able to do. If you believe in yourself and get support where you can, you will make it too. And it is totally worth it.
