Any other post-secondary study before coming to uni? (e.g. TAFE, Adult Ed)
Certificate of Fashion and Design at Launceston TAFE, but many years ago. When living on the west coast I studied 11/12 English and maths by correspondence with Hellyer College.
Previous school?
Year 10
Why did you decide to come to uni/ Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I wanted a career change of direction. The small school my children attended was the hub of community, I couldn't help but become involved with school. The suggestion was made that I should consider teaching. It wasn't until I worked with teenagers that I realised just how much I enjoy the teaching and connection with students.
Why did you choose UTAS?
I chose UTAS because it could provide me with the course that I wanted.
What is your favourite unit/subject? Why?
I don't have a favourite unit, I have a keen interest in Literacy. However, any subject that involves creative thinking is the most enjoyable.
Highlights of your study/experience so far?
My first elective "Virtual Reality" was a highlight for me, it was an astounding opportunity. I really looked forward to going to classes and gaining computing knowledge with students and lecturers I would have otherwise never met. Music was the highlight of second semester, the fun of communal singing and drumming was a bonus. This year I have learnt to engage with science with a passion and I thoroughly enjoyed the expressive freedom of the Design and Applied Learning unit.
Any advice for future students?
My best advice is the more organised you are the easier it is to survive uni. For me everything was foreign, I even got lost on campus. I took advantage of programs like Unistart, and I did learn to use the library electronically, write academically and find 10 hours a week per unit. Each semester became easier as my skills grew. When all else fails, ask for help from your new friends, the students on campus or online. The kind staff at the fishbowl (L'ton education office) will always point you in the right direction.
Where you would like to see yourself teaching in 5 years time?
I like to see myself teaching in a small community and making a significant impact on students' lives and fostering a love for learning.
Any other comments?
Going to uni will be one best things you ever do, it is a path to somewhere. You will find your own way to make the most of your experience and you will discover many delights and surprises along the way. I hope you find university as rewarding as I have.
