It was probably second semester first years prac swimming subject. We got to get our bronze medallion as part of the unit. When I started I could barely swim, but with the help of my lecturers I managed to complete all of the tasks involved with ease :)

There are no specific prerequisite subjects but success at the senior secondary level in subjects such as English, Sport Science, Physical Science, Biology, Mathematics and Outdoor Leadership would be an advantage.
Students are encouraged to apply for recognition of prior learning, which includes formal study undertaken in recognised tertiary institutions, or other demonstrated learning achievement. The double advantage website provides more information on formal articulation arrangements that exist.
The eApplications process asks if applicants want credit for previous study. Please indicate 'yes' and ensure that certified copies of your certificates of completion are provided to the admissions office.
Whether on-campus of off-campus, each student should allow approximately 10 hours of focussed study per unit, per week. This estimate includes on-campus lectures, tutorials and workshops which generally equate to 3-4 hours per unit, per week.
The Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies contains a compulsory work-based component offered through the 3rd year unit ‘Organisation in Community sport & Recreation’. This unit is delivered through lectures, tutorials and weekly sessions in the workplace. All work-based units are assessed through written assignments and completion of specific assessment indicators during the work placement.
The following minors also include a compulsory work-based component: Fitness Leader; and Personal Training. Each student will be assigned with a supervisor from the teaching staff of the Faculty of Education to support their workplace experience.
Graduates from the course will gain industry recognition towards the Fitness Leader and Personal Training area, AUSTSWIM, First Aid and in Australian Accredited Coaching Awards.
The University of Tasmania believes that as far as possible a student's financial situation should not be allowed to be an impediment to a university education. With the assistance of State and local governments, business and industry in Tasmania, and generous benefactors, it is able to provide awards to make access to the benefits of tertiary education easier.
The Tasmania Scholarships program runs on a calendar year basis. Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior.
For more information see Scholarships.
There is an increasing demand for highly trained individuals to lead and work in the sport, physical activity and recreation fields who have skills equal with, but not specific to, teacher education. Over the previous five years, through both Federal and State government initiatives (i.e. Active After Schools) and through providers of activity-based health interventions (i.e. personal trainers, fitness leaders, wilderness leaders), there is an increasing industry demand for highly trained individuals.
Graduates of this course will be highly sought after in the areas of sport and recreation leadership, community-based health management, coaching, fitness and wellness, sports management and wilderness recreation.
The Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies is a Commonwealth supported course for citizens of Australia, permanent residents, New Zealand Citizens and holders of humanitarian visas.
Australian citizens, and holders of humanitarian visas who are resident in Australia for the duration of the course, may defer their payment via HECS-HELP. Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens must pay up-front for the units in which they are enrolled each semester. For more information please refer to Course Costs
International students should refer to the International students’ website.
Some students may not be able to attend on-campus orientation because of distance or other commitments. Online Orientation takes you through how to get organised for study, find support and set yourself up for academic success. Online orientation can also be a handy backup for students who attend on-campus orientation and want reminders or further information. The Faculty also provide a specific orientation through MyLO (My Learning Online) which is accessible again and again throughout the year.
Most units require students to have access to prescribed text books in order to complete assignments. Take into account the costs of stationery, resource materials for assignments and postage. All units have some online component so broadband internet access costs must also be taken into consideration. The university has computer laboratories which are available for on-campus students to use.
Submitting you application is the first step to becoming a student. If successful you will receive an offer to join the Bachelor of Physical Activity Studies. The following steps provide a process so you understand the transition into University life.
