A Doctor of Philosophy in education enables a candidate to use expertise at the frontier of a field of research and make a significant original contribution to knowledge through their research. The research takes place over 3-4 years of study or equivalent part-time and normally results in a thesis or equivalent of circa 80-100,000 words, written in English.
The research topic for a doctorate in the Faculty of Education will reflect the candidate’s own interests and the research expertise of their supervisors. Further information on the research areas in the Faculty, please use the keyword "Education" from the Web Access Research Portal (WARP) site.
All candidates for a Doctor of Philosophy are also required to enrol concurrently in the Graduate Certificate of Research.

A Doctor of Philosophy produces individuals who can apply a substantial body of knowledge to research, investigate and develop new knowledge, in one or more fields of investigation, scholarship or professional practice.
In Australia and around the world, PhD graduates are highly regarded as potential employees. The skills and attributes gained in the degree can be the entry to a post doctoral career at a university, and a PhD is also valued highly for positions in the education and other related sectors.

Youth research on YouTube is fascinating, but inevitably challenging because online research contextually, methodologically, meaningfully differs from offline research. It requires not only the knowledge necessary to design social research based on relevant theories but also other knowledge and skills such as online ethics, new technologies and digital culture. In my research, I adopted marketing strategies to recruit teenagers online, explored new technologies to communicate with the YouTube generation, and learned software tools and programs to analyse multimodal texts.
When I chose the topic for my PhD, I didn’t realise how complicated it would be. But, I don’t know what else I can study joyfully and tirelessly. I never feel bored with my research. Every day is a new adventure!
A Higher Degree by Research provides candidates with an opportunity to undertake focussed research under supervision for several years in order to make a significant contribution within the chosen research area.
