Our postgraduate coursework program is designed for the professional education community. Developed to meet professional learning needs and the interests of teachers and other educators, with opportunities for studies to be directly linked with professional learning activities and school-based inquiry projects.
The Faculty works extensively with the Tasmanian Department of Education and other stakeholders, and is committed to partnership-based developments of courses to benefit the education community.
Students can study fully-online, from anywhere in the world.
The Master of Education (Honours) is for students who have completed the Master of Education. The course requires a minimum half a year of full-time study in addition to the minimum of 1 year spent on the Master of Education.
For those students who wish to pursue a higher degree by research, the honours program provides a sound basis for future study. High achieving students are eligible to apply for entry into a doctoral program.
Please Note: This degree does not qualify graduates as teachers. The appropriate graduate entry course for pre-service teacher training is the Master of Teaching (E7G).

Each student should allow approximately 10 hours of focussed study per unit, per week. This estimate includes on-campus lectures, tutorials and workshops which generally equate to 3-4 hours per unit, per week.
Depending on which course you undertake, the formal qualifications include: Graduate Certificate of Education (GradCertEd), MEd (coursework) and MEd (Honours). Students who graduate under the TESOL specialisation will have TESOL stated on their qualification ie. awarded Graduate Certificate in Education (TESOL).
Please note that your official academic records (which can be obtained from the Student Centre) will specify your specialisation units and the grades of assessment.
The coursework program is primarily studied/delivered by flexible mode. The units are offered in a variety of ways including optional face-to-face units over summer semester, by self-paced print and on-line materials, web-based and negotiated study. There are no lectures to attend during Semester 1 and 2. Occasional informal seminars /information sessions are organised but are non- compulsory to attend.
The University of Tasmania believes that as far as possible a student's financial situation should not be allowed to be an impediment to a university education. With the assistance of State and local governments, business and industry in Tasmania, and generous benefactors, it is able to provide awards to make access to the benefits of tertiary education easier.
The Tasmania Scholarships program runs on a calendar year basis. Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior.
For more information see Scholarships.
Yes. Student complete the coursework entirely online.
Each December the Faculty of Education conducts a Summer School. Summer School units generally consist of the normal 13 weeks of study, but with intensive delivery for up to five days on-campus. Those who are able to attend Summer School, who normally study by distance, enjoy the collegiality of class-based study and interaction with fellow students and lecturers. Summer School units are generally released in October/November each year. Students will be notified by email. Students may undertake coursework for a maximum of three units during this period.
UTAS Faculty of Education pre-service teacher courses are Commonwealth supported for citizens of Australia, permanent residents, New Zealand Citizens and holders of humanitarian visas.
Australian citizens, and holders of humanitarian visas who are resident in Australia for the duration of the course, may defer their payment via HECS-HELP. Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens must pay up-front for the units in which they are enrolled each semester.
More information on course costs.
International students should refer to the International students’ website.
Most units require students to have access to prescribed text books in order to complete assignments. Take into account the costs of stationery, resource materials for assignments and postage. All units have some online component so broadband internet access costs must also be taken into consideration. The university has computer laboratories which are available for on-campus students to use.
The Co-op Bookshop offers general books; textbooks and stationery, located in the Student Union Building on the Hobart campus or Newnham Drive Launceston campus. Alternatively you can purchase your texts online from the Co-op Bookshop.
Online students will need to liaise directly with the Student Centre with regard to their ID cards. The current procedure is for students to send a passport photo and proof of ID and signature (e.g. photocopy of your drivers licence) to the Student Centre, Locked Bag 1345, Launceston 7250. This can also be sent electronically to the Student Centre. The student ID card will give you ready access to the UTAS libraries and access to reciprocal interstate university libraries.
Information on remote access to the library can be gained from the library's website.
The Flexible Library Service is a service offered by the Library to UTAS staff and students who are:

The assessment expectation for a 12.5% unit is the equivalent of 5,000 words and while assessment tasks vary from unit to unit could include one or a selection of the following: an essay, a literature review, a poster, a seminar, an annotated bibliography, a mastery test, a piece of research or a journal article. There are no examinations.
All withdrawals must be managed via the eStudentCentre.
It is important that students are aware of Withdrawal Dates as the date that you choose to withdraw may result in an academic penalty or financial liability. Students who withdraw after the census date due to special circumstances may apply for remission using the Domestic and International Remission Form and Guidelines.
International students are requested to contact their International Student Advisor for guidance.
Domestic Leave of Absence forms and International Leave of Absence forms are available from the Student Centre forms directory.
International students may be granted up to one year leave of absence. A leave of absence may affect your student visa so it is necessary that you consult your International Student Advisor first.
Domestic students may also be granted up to one year leave of absence. Failure to complete a Leave of Absence and non-enrolment for 1 year requires that students re-apply for their position in the course.
There is provision to undertake honours after the completion of the Master of Education. A high level of academic achievement overall is a pre-requisite and eligible students will be invited to participate in the honours program.
Submitting you application is the first step to becoming a student. If successful you will receive an offer to join the course. The following steps provide a process so you understand the transition into University life.
