Why did you decide to become a teacher?
I want students to love coming to school and learning. Teaching is such an important role and is a diverse career which allows you to see the progress students are making, and you have the opportunity to be a positive influence in their lives.
Why did you decide to do honours?
I wanted to choose a topic that I was interested in and discover an answer to my question. It was a great opportunity and it has made me so much more knowledgeable about my topic and researching in general.
Why did you choose UTAS?
Since my degree was offered locally, I could remain at home and stay in touch with friends and continue working my casual job.
Highlights of your honours study/experience so far?
Getting the data and then participating in the Cradle Coast Research Week, where I was able to present the preliminary findings of my study.
Any advice for future honours students?
Go for it, it's great to be able to direct your own learning. Try to submit your ethics application as soon as possible, and once you get all the approvals you need, start collecting your data immediately. Once you have data your project becomes more personal, so the last three chapters are a breeze to write!
What are your plans after you graduate with your honours degree?
Graduating with honours has created more opportunites than I expected to have when I began my degree. I want to teach for a few years in Tasmania, then work overseas for a year or two and then come back and gain a PhD at UTAS.
