A Master of Education (Research) degree enables a candidate to undertake a program of research and advanced study in a specialist field. The research takes place over 2 years of study or equivalent part-time and normally results in a thesis or equivalent of traditionally circa 30,000 words written in English.
Topics for Masters (research) degrees in the Faculty of Education will reflect the candidate’s own interests and the research expertise of their supervisors. Further information on the research areas in the Faculty, please use the keyword "Education" from the Web Access Research Portal (WARP) site.
All candidates for a Masters (research) degree are also required to enrol concurrently in two units in the Graduate Certificate of Research.
Applicants should apply after finding a potential supervisor and discussing and agreeing on their proposed topic. Applicants will be considered who have:
Graduates will fulfill the skill requirements in the Australian Qualification Framework for this degree and the University of Tasmania expects all graduates of a Master of Education (Research) to meet its Generic Attributes
Graduates are highly valued for positions in the education and other relevant sectors. A Master of Education (Research) degree also provides a pathway to a PhD.

I received a great piece of advice from a high-profile Education researcher: find your supervisors and enrol in their university! I knew through reading relevant literature on my topic that Kim and Rosemary were the best in the country, so it was a natural step to approach them and then enrol in UTas.
A Higher Degree by Research provides candidates with an opportunity to undertake focussed research under supervision for several years in order to make a significant contribution within the chosen research area.
Applications may be submitted anytime throughout the year. Applications are assessed by a committee at the end of each month.
