About the Degree:

UTAS Faculty of Education pre-service teacher courses qualify students for a profession that is challenging and enormously fulfilling.  Accredited by the Teachers Registration Board, Tasmania, the courses require students to reflect on and develop their own professional practice to the best advantage of the students they will one day be teaching.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is a graduate-entry pre-service teacher qualification that prepares students as professional educators to work with children, particularly in the primary and middle years of schooling (Prep to Year 8).  Thus, graduates may seek employment opportunities across these years of schooling, locally, interstate and globally.

Professional Experience

All students must be available to attend professional experience in an educational setting for a number of weeks each year, totalling 60 days over two years (unpaid). Students must show competence in the school
setting across established criteria that are signed off by the academic supervisor and colleague teacher.

Admission requirements

The minimum entry requirement, for all students, is the completion of an initial degree at an approved tertiary education institution. Specific entry requirements for the Primary specialisations will confer capacity for employment nationally.

Subject content studies in your initial degree should contain a minimum of one year of study relevant to at least one of the key learning areas of the Primary school curriculum. The Key Learning areas are listed below.

Some mid-year entry Master of Teaching (Secondary) students will require 5 or more equivalent semesters of study (2.5 years) to complete their degree due to the structure of the course. Please contact the Course Support Officer for further information.

International Students:

Requirements are the same as for domestic students; plus applicants must meet minimum English language requirements. Please see international admission requirements.

Course Structure

The structure of our Master of Teaching courses generally includes professional studies, curriculum and methods studies and professional experience. Comprehensive unit details are available from the Course and Unit Handbook.

A minimum enrolment number of 12 applies to this offering. Should enrolments not reach the minimum number required for on-campus study, students may be transferred to the on-line offering and advised of this change before semester commences.

FAQ

1. I have completed previous study; can I receive recognition for prior learning?

Credit may only be provided when the previous study is of equivalent level and content

The eApplications process asks if applicants want credit for previous study. Please indicate 'yes' and ensure that certified copies of your certificates of completion are provided to the admissions office.

2. Is the workload heavy?

Whether on-campus of off-campus, each student should allow approximately 10 hours of focussed study per unit, per week. This estimate includes on-campus lectures, tutorials and workshops which generally equate to 3-4 hours per unit, per week.

3. Is there professional experience included?

Students must be available to attend unpaid Professional Experience at schools on a full-time basis for a number of weeks each year, totalling a minimum of 70 days over 2 years. A Teachers Registration Board Good Character Check is required for placements.

4. What professional recognition will I get for completing the course?

All of the UTAS Faculty of Education pre-service teacher courses are accredited through the Teachers Registration Board, Tasmania. Graduates from the course are eligible for registration with the Teachers Registration Board, Tasmania upon successful completion of the degree (online application process). The mutual recognition act (Mutual Recognition Act 1992 (Cth) or the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (Cth)) entitles those who are already registered (in the first state) to register in the other states of Australia and New Zealand. Please note that this does not apply to New South Wales – more information.

5. Are there any scholarships available?

The University of Tasmania believes that as far as possible a student's financial situation should not be allowed to be an impediment to a university education. With the assistance of State and local governments, business and industry in Tasmania, and generous benefactors, it is able to provide awards to make access to the benefits of tertiary education easier.

The Tasmania Scholarships program runs on a calendar year basis. Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior.

6. Can I study externally?

Yes. Student can complete the coursework entirely online, externally with no on-campus requirements. Note that Professional Experience must be attended in educational settings.

All units are available both face to face (internal) at the Newnham Campus (Launceston) and Sandy Bay Campus (Hobart) and externally, fully online.

Students have the flexibility to enrol in both internal and external units within the same semester to suit their lifestyle.

7. Are any units offered over summer?

There are no Master of Teaching units currently available over summer semester.

8. What if I canít attend orientation?

Some students may not be able to attend on-campus orientation because of distance or other commitments. Online Orientation takes you through how to get organised for study, find support and set yourself up for academic success. Online orientation can also be a handy backup for students who attend on-campus orientation and want reminders or further information. The Faculty also provide a specific orientation through MyLO (My Learning Online) which is accessible again and again throughout the year.

9. Do I have to pay fees up-front?

All of the UTAS Faculty of Education pre-service teacher courses are Commonwealth supported for citizens of Australia, permanent residents, New Zealand Citizens and holders of humanitarian visas.

Australian citizens, and holders of humanitarian visas who are resident in Australia for the duration of the course, may defer their payment via HECS-HELP. Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens must pay up-front for the units in which they are enrolled each semester.

10. What other costs should I consider?

Most units require students to have access to prescribed text books in order to complete assignments. Take into account the costs of stationery, resource materials for assignments and postage. All units have some online component so broadband internet access costs must also be taken into consideration. The university has computer laboratories which are available for on-campus students to use.

11. Do I have to volunteer in a school?

The School of Education strongly encourages all pre-service teachers to maintain regular contact with schools. For this reason, volunteering in an educational setting or classroom is highly recommended. In addition, many units require students to have access to an educational setting so being involved in an ongoing volunteering arrangement would be highly beneficial.

12. Where can I buy textbooks?

The Co-op Bookshop offers general books; textbooks and stationery, located in the Student Union Building on the Hobart campus or Newnham Drive Launceston campus. Alternatively you can purchase your texts online from the Co-op Bookshop.

13. As a distance student, how can I get my ID card?

Online students will need to liaise directly with the Student Centre with regard to their ID cards. The current procedure is for students to send a passport photo and proof of ID and signature (e.g. photocopy of your drivers licence) to the Student Centre, Locked Bag 1345, Launceston 7250. This can also be sent electronically to Student.Centre@utas.edu.au. The student ID card will give you ready access to the UTAS libraries and access to reciprocal interstate university libraries.

14. As a distance student what access do I have to the library?

On remote access to the library can be gained from the Library's website.

The Flexible Library Service is a service offered by the Library to UTAS staff and students who are:

  • Living or undertaking practical placement more than 40km from the Launceston and Sandy Bay campuses during semester or
  • Undertaking studies or working at the Cradle Coast Campus or
  • Registered with the University as a student with special needs due to a disability.

Services offered:

  • You can request specific items from the Library catalogue and have them posted to your designated address
  • You can request articles or extracts from books to be posted or sent as an electronic attachment to your email

15. As a distance student where will I sit my exam?

Each unit has different assessment requirements. If the unit you are enrolled in has an examination, any queries relating to sitting the examinations at a different location should be directed to the Examinations Office. All correspondence from the Examinations Office will be done only via email. Check your university email account on a regular basis.

If you are a distance education student undertaking exams whose Study Centre is Isolated (I), or Interstate (N), the Examinations Office will send you an email about your exams at the beginning of the semester. This information will become clearer to you when you are at the stage of enrolling in your units.

16. Can I undertake honours?

No. Honours is not available with the Master of Teaching.

17. What is the process after I apply?

Submitting you application is the first step to becoming a student. If successful you will receive an offer to join the course. The following steps provide a process so you understand the transition into University life.

  • If successful, you will receive an email from admissions with an offer to join the course
  • Accept your offer online
  • Apply for credit – if applicable, by sending in transcripts
  • Wait for an email from the Faculty of Education, which will assist with the next step in the enrolment process
  • Enrol in your units
  • Order you textbooks
  • Use your University email account
  • Log on to MyLO
  • Become familiar with the Faculty of Education website, in particular the Professional Experience information
  • Apply for your Good Character Check
  • Attend orientation
  • Commence study
  • Remember to check your University email account regularly.
