About UsThe Nature Culture Network was established in July 2006, to bring together researchers from different disciplines whose work is relevant to the study of the connections and interplay between culture, on the one hand, and nature and the environment on the other. This interdisciplinary research network is based at the University of Tasmania, and is hosted by the Faculty of Arts. In 2007, it is convened by Dr Libby Lester (English, Journalism & European Languages), Dr Elle Leane (English, Journalism & European Languages) and Dr Aidan Davison (Geography & Environmental Studies).
Mission StatementThe UTas Nature Culture Network (NCN) draws together researchers from all Faculties to facilitate social and cultural research about nature and the environment. The mission of NCN is to build an international reputation for excellence, with UTas as a hub of research into experiential, discursive and symbolic understandings of nature, and how this understanding is culturally expressed in the community, the arts, the media, and by policymakers. To achieve this mission, NCN * operates as a clearinghouse for information, and as a forum for the exchange of ideas and collaborative endeavors within the university and between UTas and others; * aims to support innovative research initiatives based on the nature/culture nexus; * operates as a framework for attracting and supporting research higher degree students; * provides a space for professional development, such as early-career mentoring, and offers practical assistance and resources to researchers (such as sourcing research funding, community engagement and media interpretation); * provides an institutional mechanism for raising the profile of social and cultural research about nature across all UTas theme areas, and especially those of Environment and Community, Place and Change.
