The Graduate Research community in the School of English, Journalism and European Languages is vibrant and dynamic, and we welcome applications from prospective candidates. We offer a range of graduate research programmes in all our teaching disciplines – English, Journalism, Media and Communications, French and German – and it is possible to enrol in either Masters and PhD programmes (and to transfer from one to another after an initial period of enrolment).
Our staff can provide supervision in a range of areas. We offer supervision in English, creative writing (MA only), journalism, media, and communication, French and Francophone literature, and Austrian, German, and Swiss literature. Follow the links below to explore the available research areas for supervision.
We have a graduate student cohort of between 20 and 30 candidates, both full-time and part-time, who work on a diverse range of projects: see the Graduate Student profiles below for details. In addition to their supervisory relationships, candidates are encouraged to become involved in the full life of the School. As Graduate Research Coordinator, I run a series of seminars during the year focusing on research training skills relevant to graduate researchers across the disciplines. These include regular postgraduate panels in the School's Removing the Boundaries seminar series. 'ejels' – the Tasmania University Union English, Journalism and European Languages Society – provides regular social and intellectual opportunities for candidates. A range of other events actively encourage postgraduate involvement: the postgraduate theory reading group, the Centre for Colonialism and Its Aftermath's regular seminars, symposia, conferences and work-in-progress days, and the possibility of
casual
tutoring and research assistant work in SEJEL all expose postgraduates to the academics and teachers of the School, in addition to our visiting colleagues from national and international institutions.
Please get in contact with me to discuss graduate research possibilities.
