The University of Tasmania, founded in 1890, is Australia’s fourth oldest university, and has a proud tradition of excellence in learning, teaching, and research. The Faculty of Arts at UTAS encompasses a wide range of disciplines across the creative arts, the humanities, and the social sciences, and houses several research centres including the Centre for Colonialism and Its Aftermath (CAIA).

The School of English, Journalism and European Languages is one of the largest Schools in the Faculty, and offers study opportunities on the three major campuses in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. It has a strong focus on both teaching and research, offering a wide range of courses and units in each of its three major disciplines: English literary studies; Journalism, Media and Communications; and European Languages (French and German). Research is well-supported in the School, and Australian Research Council (ARC) grants have regularly been awarded to staff. Many of our staff have substantial international reputations in their specialized fields.
