Contemporary German-language poetry, with a particular emphasis on oral, performance and Spoken-word poetry.
Billy Badger is a Lecturer and co-ordinator of German in the School of English, Journalism and European Languages. After completing his PhD in Tasmania, he was Lecturer and Co-ordinator of German at Massey University in New Zealand, before returning to the University of Tasmania. He has a strong research interest in post-war German literature, and has published widely on the literatures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Following on from his doctoral work, he authored a book and several refereed articles on the poetry of post-war Austrian exile poet, Erich Fried. His subsequent research has centred on contemporary spoken-word poetry and prose in German-speaking countries. Recent articles include studies of metaphor, post-modernism, form and neo-nomadism in both the poetry and literary programme of contemporary German poets. He is currently working on a project that compares representations of consumerism in the form and content of the poetry of Bas Böttcher, under the draft title “»Zur Ware gibt’s Werbung« Das Gedicht als lyrische Werbung und Konsumware,” in which he explores the relationship between content and form in the spoken-word poetry of Bas Böttcher. Böttcher’s work has been described as a response to the contradictions and demands of consumer society. In keeping with these thematic concerns, Böttcher views his own poetry as a consumer product that embodies packaging, image, advertising and product.
